Yesterday, thanks to the Blue Jays, I had a chance to participate in the Daniel Tudisco Memorial Golf Tournament in Cambridge. It was my second visit in as many years. I never met the man the tournament pays tribute to, and because it is a Memorial Tournament few will. That is the tragedy of suicide. It is a national blemish that isn’t going away. We think of ourselves as an advanced society, able to care for our neighbours and lend a hand. The facts suggest otherwise. In Canada, there are, on average 10 suicides every day. That’s around 4-thousand annually. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young Canadians. Polls show the vast majority of us, don’t know that. Every year my sons were in high school, at least one person at that one school died by suicide. It’s not an easy conversation. Nothing about this subject is easy, but this much is obvious. We MUST do better. It can be as easy as saying “how are you doing?” and sticking around for an answer. Suicide is insidious and it’s up to us to remove the stigma. For every death, there are around 100 attempts. And it’s not just teens. There is a rise in the number of suicide deaths in senior citizens. Monies raised yesterday support the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council. The Tudisco Family knows it’s too late to help Daniel, but I salute the effort to help the next guy.
