Risk Factors
It is difficult to know who is or might become suicidal. Suicide can be prevented if we are all aware and know that there is help out there. Individuals may be at risk if they experience any of the following:
- any circumstance which creates unbearable pain (eg. Major life stresses or losses)
- previous suicide attempts
- depression or other serious mental health problems
- death of a loved one, especially if by suicide
- alcohol or dug abuse, problem gambling and other addictions (self or a family member)
- abuse or violence (physical, sexual, or emotional)
- bullying or harassment
- sexual orientation/gender identity
- chronic illness or disability
- conflict in relationships
- feelings of failure
