World Suicide Prevention Day provides an opportunity for the community to gather, to remember, and to heal. Each year the WRSPC hosts an annual World Suicide Prevention Day event, encouraging anyone in our community to join. While the event is centered around acknowledging those whose lives have been touched by suicide, it is also about providing mental wellbeing education and resources to everyone in our community and providing a gathering space where individuals can feel connection and belonging.

This year, we worked hard at providing an adapted event with at-home and online activities for our community to partake in with hopes of still providing a strong sense of community despite being unable to gather in person.

Our first activity was distributing World Suicide Prevention Day At-Home Activity Kits. These kits went to around 300 households or organizations, providing materials for almost 900 individuals to participate in these at-home activities. These kits included beautiful window posters designed, printed, and donated by Simpson Print.

Next, we engaged the community with a social media challenge, encouraging them to create butterflies and send their images to us for a chance to win an admission pass generously donated by Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. We had multiple beautiful submissions and enjoyed seeing the creativity of our community.

We adapted our usual wellness fair from it’s in-person format to a virtual one, and received video submissions from 12 participating organizations. The information fair videos can be viewed here.

Finally, we were able to film a World Suicide Prevention Day Ceremony & Butterfly release at Rolling Hills Estate with the help of Spirit Guide Productions, and music by Juneyt. The video can be viewed below for any who missed our live premier on Facebook.

We once again thank everyone who made these events possible, including our dedicated, flexible, and innovative planning committee members Jane, Carol, Linda, and Tamara who helped us pivot to design a meaningful event delivered virtually, and our ceremony speakers Elisa Brewer-Singh, Adrienne Luft, and Dena Moitoso.
