In June of 2020, the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council committed to growth by continuously pursuing opportunities to view suicide prevention efforts from a lens of anti-racism. As part of this pursuit, we as an organization are mindful that the My Life Matters messaging on our t-shirts may have a negative impact for some individuals within the larger community within the cultural context of the Black Lives Matter movement. Our commitment to growth means that this fall we will continue to have important conversations and consultations to talk about the impact of our messaging and explore ways to move forward. While we are engaged in these important conversations, the Council will refrain from selling and wearing the t-shirts at public events and hope you will consider this also. We thank you for your understanding as we continue to honour the voices of those with lived experience and find our path forward.
