In September, students across our Region will start a new semester or school year. New beginnings and periods of transition can be challenging for some. To help support our community, WRSPC has compiled a list of mental health resources for students attending school, including post-secondary, in the Region of Waterloo.

Please note: links for each resource are included below.

Conestoga College

On Campus Resources

The Breathing Space

A student wellness space located at the Doon Kitchener Campus, Doon 1A107, which serves as a quiet place for students to take a break.

Note: the space may be closed due to Covid-19. Online drop-in groups may be available instead, though the Co-Curricular Portal.

Counselling

Confidential, one-to-one appointments with counsellors are available to help students work through issues affecting their mental health.

Peer Support

Peer support is a mental health and substance use service provided by an individual who has lived experience with these subjects. It focuses on building connections and sharing wellness tools and strategies.

A Canadian Mental Health Association peer support navigator is available for appointments and runs weekly peer support wellness and mental health drop-in groups.

Indigenous Student Services

Be-Dah-Bin Gamik, a Place of New Beginnings

provides services for Indigenous students at Conestoga College, including those who are First Nations (status and non-status), Métis and Inuit.

Programs and Services include:

  • Elder in Residence Program
  • Indigenous Student Circle
  • Traditional Counselling
    • A holistic approach based on Medicine Wheel teachings is used to counsel and work with students using traditional medicine, language and ceremonies in a supportive and confidential environment.

Counselling

Counselling services and individual appointments are available at no charge to registered University of Waterloo students in classes or on co-op terms.

Counselling Services is currently providing services in-person, by phone and video Mon – Fri,  8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Group Therapy and Workshops

Counselling Services also provides a range of group therapy and workshop opportunities.

MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support)

MATES is a one-to-one peer support program offered by the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA).

MATES provides services to students who are experiencing social difficulties, and transitional challenges adapting to university life or different cultures.

Partnership with IMPACT

IMPACT stands for the Integrated Mobile Police and Crisis Team, and is a collaboration between   the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington, and the University of Waterloo Special Constable Services.

An IMPACT worker will now respond with the University of Waterloo Special Constable Services to mental health emergencies on campus.

Individuals are connected with the IMPACT worker by contacting Special Constable Services.

A worker is on campus:

  • Thursday, 3pm to 12am
  • Friday, 2pm to 12am
  • Saturday, 2pm to 12am
  • Sunday, 2pm to 12am

Indigenous Student Services

Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre (WISC)

WISC strives to provide support to all Indigenous students at the University of Waterloo.

Programs and Services include:

  • Academics: help with funding and finding a tutor
  • Cultural programming: Elder teachings, drum teachings, and beading Thursdays.
  • Counselling: Metti Tessema is the counsellor for Indigenous student support.
  • Food Share, Housing, and more!

Wilfrid Laurier University

On Campus Resources

Student Wellness Centre Counselling

Counselling services are being offered remotely by phone or video.

Initial appointments will be by telephone; if you are interested in video counselling, discuss it  with your counsellor at your first appointment.

To book an appointment on the Waterloo campus, call 519.884.0710 x3146 or on the Brantford campus, call 519.756.8228 x5803.

Workshops and Groups

Professional, clinical staff in the Student Wellness Centre offer psychoeducational workshops and groups to provide additional support to students.

Residence Counselling

The Department of Residence has a professionally trained Residence Life Counsellor available to meet with first-year students who are living in residence.

This counsellor speacializes in addressing the needs of first-year Laurier students who are struggling with personal and/or mental health issues as they transition to Laurier and life in residence.

Heather Landells is the current Residence Life Coordinator.

Indigenous Student Services

NADJIWAN KAANDOSSIWIN GAMIK – INDIGENOUS STUDENT CENTRE (157 Albert St. Waterloo)

Visit the Indigenous Student Centre – Waterloo Campus for study space and one-on-one appointments with the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator, Stephanie.

Programs and Services include:

  • Personal support: focus on student well-being and cultural identity guidance.
  • Cultural programming: craft workshops, speaker series, moon ceremonies and more.
  • Visiting Elders-in-Residence: attend an Elder talk or schedule a one-on-one – their knowledge and guidance is invaluable.

Waterloo Region District School Board

The specific supports and resources available at each school may be different, and there are different types of supports available depending on if a student is attending an elementary or high school. We encourage students, as well as parents and caregivers, to speak with the administrative staff at their or their child’s school for specific information and resources.

In general, there are several people at a school that a student can talk to if they are struggling and need help. These include:

  • Teachers or Coaches
  • Principals
  • Guidance Counselor or Child & Youth Worker (CYW)
  • Friends

WRDSB has compiled a list of resources available in the Waterloo Region community, as well as online. These resources aim to help support mental health and well-being.
