Volunteer Opportunity- Board of Directors

The Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council (WRSPC) is inviting applications for new Board Members to serve a two-year term (September 2024 to September 2026).

The WRSPC Board of Directors operates under a governance model with a commitment to the growth and financial well-being of the organization and its mission to reduce suicide and its impact through collaboration, education, training and building a sense of belonging.

Talents and Experience

We are particularly interested in individuals who have experience/expertise in the following areas of strength and influence:

  • Fund Development
  • Legal
  • Local Business Community
  • Media
  • Political

We are also looking for individuals who are interested in advancing into leadership positions.

Board Commitment to Inclusion, Equity, and Lived Experience

To better serve the diverse needs of our community, WRSPC is committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-oppressive and inclusive environment where board members, staff and community members are represented across the Council.  Representation, celebration and allyship of diversity including ethnicities, races, sexual and gender identities, cultural backgrounds, abilities and beliefs are valued.  We also encourage applicants who have lived experience with mental health challenges and suicide.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Act as positive and passionate ambassadors for WRSPC both in Board meetings and out in the community, attending WRSPC events whenever possible.
  • Regularly attend, be prepared for and actively participate in monthly Board meetings.
  • Participate on at least one committee of the Board.
  • Support the organization’s policies and procedures for conducting business and ensure its activities align with the mission and vision, as well as the objectives outlined in our Strategic Plan.
  • Keep informed about the organization, its issues, and its connection to the community.
  • Actively contribute to the financial health and sustainability of our organization through donations, participation in fundraising events and campaigns, and/or the planning and implementation of new initiatives.
  • Help identify and cultivate relationships in the community with the purpose of recruiting donors, volunteers, and advocates to support our work.

Time Commitment

The expected time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month.  Board meetings are monthly from September to June with one meeting scheduled between June and September and are traditionally held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 9:00am to 11:00am. Special meetings may be called at the discretion of the Executive Director or the Chair.
